From Silence to Healing: One Woman’s Journey of Courage

1 October 2025

This story has been de-identified to protect the client’s privacy. In this blog, one of our clients shares their personal journey with trauma and healing through EMDR therapy. In their own words, they reflect on the challenges they faced and the hope they found along the way.

Growing up in India, she lived in silence. As a child, she endured the unthinkable, sexual assault by her father. Instead of protection, she was met with neglect. Instead of comfort, she carried shame and guilt that never belonged to her.

By seventeen, she left home. Freedom, however, did not immediately bring safety. She found herself in a series of toxic relationships, each one reinforcing the wounds left unhealed.

Breaking Away

When she met her partner, she felt a spark of hope. Together, they moved to Australia, leaving behind the weight of stigma and the small-mindedness of her community. But oceans and miles could not erase what lived inside her. The shame, the guilt, the trauma, all travelled with her.

This is the reality many survivors of childhood trauma face. Geography may change, but unresolved pain follows until it is gently addressed with the right support.

Finding Trauma Therapy

When she reached out for psychological support in Brisbane, she was exhausted by years of carrying invisible scars. She began therapy that focused on two evidence-based approaches: parts work and EMDR therapy.

Through parts work therapy, she connected with the younger versions of herself, the wounded child who had been silenced, neglected, and shamed. Slowly, she began to see that these parts deserved compassion, not blame.

With EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)—a method recognised internationally, including by EMDR Australia—she started processing memories that had haunted her for decades. Instead of being trapped in them, she began to feel freedom from their grip. Flashbacks softened. The shame began to lift. She started to rebuild a sense of self.

A Journey Still Unfolding

Healing from trauma is not a quick fix. There are still hard days, but she has come a long way from the silenced teenager who ran away at seventeen. Today, she walks with greater awareness, compassion for herself, and courage to keep rewriting her story.

The Power of Healing

Her journey shows that healing from childhood trauma is not about forgetting—it’s about reclaiming. It’s about giving voice to the parts of us that were silenced. It’s about remembering that shame never belonged to the survivor. And it’s about discovering that with courage, support, and the right therapy, even the deepest wounds can begin to heal.

At Reflections Psychology Services, you don’t have to walk this path alone. Our psychologists and mental health social worker are trained in EMDR and trauma therapy to help you find relief, strength, and hope.
