For years, I felt like I was living with ghosts. Memories from my past weren’t just in my head, they lived in my body. I would wake up at night with my heart racing, avoid certain places, and feel triggered by things other people didn’t even notice.
I tried to tell myself to “move on,” but no matter how much I understood the past logically, my nervous system stayed stuck. It was exhausting to feel like I was surviving instead of living. That’s when I learned about Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.
My First Steps into EMDR
To be honest, I was nervous. The idea of revisiting traumatic memories terrified me. But my psychologist reassured me that EMDR wasn’t about reliving the pain, it was about helping my brain reprocess it so it could finally let go.
In those first sessions, I focused on a painful memory while following eye movements. At first, the emotions were overwhelming. But slowly, something shifted. The memory began to feel less sharp and more distant, less like it was happening “now.” I could see it as something that happened in the past.
How the Healing Unfolded
Over time, the heavy beliefs I carried started to change. Where I once thought, “I am powerless,” I began to feel, “I am strong.” Where shame had lived, self-compassion started to grow.
The changes weren’t just in my mind, they showed up in my daily life. I began to sleep better, to laugh more freely, and to feel calmer in situations that once triggered panic. I even picked up painting again, something I hadn’t touched in years.
For the first time, I felt like the future was mine to shape, not my trauma’s.
What I Want Others to Know
Recovery isn’t a straight line. There were times I doubted the process and times the emotions felt too big. But EMDR gave me the tools and space to move forward.
If you’re reading this and wondering if healing is possible, my answer is yes. EMDR therapy helped me stop living in survival mode and start truly living again.
At Reflections Psychology Services, you don’t have to walk this path alone. Our psychologists and mental health social worker are trained in EMDR and trauma therapy to help you find relief, strength, and hope.
